Rutelli’s Rome: Mayors and Personality Politics in Italy

Francesco Rutelli’s period as mayor of Rome was marked by controversy over his relationship with the Vatican, and with the use of the 2000 Holy Year for the replanning and modernization of Rome. His high profile in the 2001 general election demonstrates the growing importance of mayors in Italian political life.
